Lake Toba (formed by a supervolcano) is a great place to unwind after experiencing some of North Sumatra’s natural attractions. The biodiversity in the rain forests of the north is staggering (and includes wild orangutans!) while the islands to the west of Sumatra are filled with marine life under the sparkling surface. There’s no doubt that these are fertile lands. There are 35 active volcanoes in Sumatra, and in North Sumatra, two volcanoes are of particular interest to travellers: Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak – both located closely to Berastagi. The 2014 tsunami hit North Sumatra especially hard. This fiery island in western Indonesia sits right on top of the Pacific Ocean’s “ring of fire” making it a true hotspot for cataclysmic events.
